Pilgrimage Overview
The Sacred Hill of Lord Ayyappa — A Journey of Faith and Devotion
Sabarimala, nestled at an altitude of 914 metres in the Periyar Tiger Reserve hills of Pathanamthitta
district, Kerala, is home to the Sree Ayyappan Temple — one of the largest annual
pilgrimage sites on earth. During the Mandala–Makaravilakku season, over 50 lakh devotees from across India
— especially Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh — make the sacred trek to seek blessings from
Lord Ayyappa (also called Sastha or Dharma Sastha).
The pilgrimage begins with a mandatory 41-day deeksha (vratham) — a period of rigorous
spiritual discipline involving vegetarianism, celibacy, daily prayers, and wearing the sacred irumudi
kettu (a twin-compartment bag containing offerings). Devotees are traditionally referred to as
Swami and greet each other with the sacred call "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa!"
The most traditional route begins at Erumeli — where devotees perform the colourful
Pettathullal ceremony — and continues through the ancient forest trekking path before ascending the 18
golden steps (Pathinettampadi) to the sanctum sanctorum. Rithish Tours & Travels provides
reliable private cab service from Madurai to Pampa base camp, ensuring a comfortable journey for devotees
and their families.
